New Jersey man dies from meat allergy triggered by tick bite

Nov 15, 2025 | Health

A New Jersey man has died in what marks the first documented fatal case of alpha-gal syndrome, a rare and severe meat allergy known to be triggered by tick bites.

In September 2024, a 47-year-old man died after suffering a sudden collapse and losing consciousness approximately four hours after eating a hamburger at a barbeque.

Despite immediate resuscitation efforts initiated by his son and continued by paramedics, the man was pronounced deceased later that night at a hospital, according to a medical case report detailing the incident.

A new case report, published Thursday (Nov. 13) in *The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology in Practice*, highlights a critical public health concern. The authors deliberately documented a deadly instance of alpha-gal syndrome, stressing the importance of this record due to many U.S. doctors remaining unaware of the condition. This lack of awareness is particularly troubling as the ticks primarily responsible for spreading the disease continue to expand their territorial reach.
