A council projects that an investment exceeding £1 million in artificial intelligence could prevent up to 256 families from facing homelessness annually.

Somerset Council’s cabinet has approved a £1.56 million investment in artificial intelligence and data analysis. This financial commitment signals a “radical rethink” in the council’s strategy to address escalating demand for services and rising operational costs.

Funding will establish a new system designed to consolidate resident data currently dispersed across various council departments. By integrating this information into a single, comprehensive view, officials aim to identify individuals and families at risk of homelessness more swiftly.

Councillor Theo Butt-Philip, the council’s lead member for transformation, affirmed that the strategic initiative is designed to enable the authority to innovate its operations and achieve superior outcomes.

Citing relentlessly increasing demand and escalating service costs, Mr. Butt-Philip underscored the critical need for a complete reevaluation of operational methods. He stressed the importance of fundamentally shifting strategies to prioritize prevention.

The official announced a strategic, long-term investment designed to significantly strengthen the council’s capabilities across all departments. He emphasized that this initiative would enable the council to fully leverage the opportunities presented by enhanced data utilization and artificial intelligence.

The council anticipates that a broader application of artificial intelligence will empower its staff to identify critical gaps in the support services provided to residents requiring municipal assistance.

The council has allocated capital funds to recruit an additional staff member for its AI and data team.
